As the title says, let's talk about Japan and its unique quirks, customs and inventions!

What things or customs common in Japan do you find very interesting and would love to try to experience or buy? What do you find the weirdest or even twisted about Japan or on the other hand why do you admire this particular country?

I'll start. I only mention a few things, because Japan is so full of surprises and I could carry on for forever..

I'd love to try to visit some animal and manga cafés (I added the video bellow). Buy Japanese KitKat with original flawors (green tea, red beans, shingen mochi etc.) and some weekly published manga magazine. Try using some atypical vending machine (for example fortune telling XD). Their shinkansen and any robots are very interesting inventions too (maybe even scary by being so realistic).

I find weird mostly their toilet functions, but at the same time it's quite admirable. I heard you can listen to a relaxing music of raining or nature sounds while reading newspaper, which is said to be common in some Japanese workplace during working breaks wahah, maybe it's just a rumour. Other weird things, like from different world, would be (and maybe a bit twisted) Kanamara matsuri: The Phalus festival (local sweets are...well, you can make a guess what), buying living crab from a vending machine and washing in ramen for example XD

I find very admirable their punctuality, cleanliness, hard working nature and ability to keep their traditions.

Here are some videos for more ideas..

Spoiler

Hopefully it's enjoyable topic to discuss ^_^

I'd love to try the hot springs, or even just a bath that I can fit into (it's been years since I've been able to soak in a bath properly, since they're pretty tiny in the states).

Oh yeah, a whole different world indeed XD I'm quarter Japanese, but well, I'm not a citizen so there are still things that leave me stunned lol. If you're talking about interesting things, there might be a lot. Like anything related to anime/manga (obviously XD), the festivals, Obon, Tenjin Matsuri etc, the food, the culture, the technology. Oh and did I mention the food? XD

There are indeed things that I find really weird and leave me speechless. Like family for rent. This is like one of the strangest things you might hear on earth XD. As far as I can remember there was no such thing when I was still a kid, so I'm not sure when it started. Even my grandmother was bewildered lol. Just like the name says, you can rent a family. Dad, mom, sons/daughters etc, and act like a real family. There might be various reasons as to why they're renting. But to be honest, it is something that I still cannot understand, even to this day. Haha.

Something that I'm not fond of; mental health awareness. It seems to be ingrained in the culture that if you're different, you'll be treated differently. Pushed out of the circle. This is one of the major reasons why the suicide rate is high; they don't want to seek help from anyone because they're afraid of how the society would view them. And to me that is just so sad.

Ooh, I heard sth about that somewhere. It could be probably used for those, who lost the particular family member or never seen her/him in their life, so I guess I understand, why it exists, but it is really unique, typical Japan :D Kinda reminded me cuddle cafés, where you can pay, for lying next to a girl or even hug her! But again, many young ppl actually has zero experience, so they could get to know, how it's like, so.... understandable, but still weird, maybe that's why I love Japan so much :D

That is very unfortunate. It is often shown in animes, the hate for anything out of ordinary... , but I'd never thought to be something so common in Japan nowdays, I'm so sorry to hear that :( But I suppose, it should be generalized, I don't think it happens only in Japan. Hopefully it's not everywhere like that!

Ooh, those are very interesting spots and food, never heard of Kirakyushu's flower tunnels, it looks like some flower art display, I wonder, isn't it some kind of a temporary exhibiton?

I heard there are other places with animals like deers, bunnies and monkies, I'd like to visit some of them too, but foxies, aaw, those happy sound they make are just too adorable :3

Japanese toilets are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. @angellucy you won't know until you experience it. The system is convenient and efficient.

I have top two priorities for any future visit to Japan.
1. Visit Tadasu no Mori in Kyoto (ofc Kyoto has a lot of attractive things but this place is a bit special)
2. Hokkaido: Sapporo Snow Festival. I really really wanna see this festival /o/

But the best thing about Japanese cities are the subways. I mean, traveling can't get any more convenient. Maybe this will sound weird to people who come from other countries with subways because you are used to it. But my country doesn't have any subway and I wish it did.

Oh my, this could go really really bad..err hmm let's not get into that then

I've heard there is actually city mascot for Osaka and John Oliver-Tonight show even did a couple of parody episodes for it. In good faith of course.

I've also heard that unlike popular conventions in the rest of the world, vending machines don't just drop chips and candy in Japan, they facilitate quite a few things.

I've heard that Japan is in general, extremely quiet country, to the point that it can drive people who go there from bustling cities nuts due to change of pace.

Japan is also home to some of the most weird-ass inventions, I read some time back that they had invented a device to replicate RL kiss when someone sends an internet kiss.

I've also heard that MacD in Japan is best in the world, kind of weird but since I'm walking talking fast food (mostly chicken) junkie, it matters to me.

I've head that In recent times Japan is also intending to revive its military completely to stand up against China.

I've also heard that there is actually a toilet seat restaurant in Japan, I don't know how it works but dish/bowl is in the shape of actually toilet bowl I guess.

I've heard that lot of old people die all alone in their apartments and don't get discovered for months since everything is auto paid on a bank account, so till the money runs out there is a good chance no one will know you are no more.

I've also heard that the real Japanese population is actually not into "BustyBeauty" of anime and manga as the world would like to think, they do this specifically to attract readers from the western world. (US-EU)
