The tournament had many components to it. Some of which could be incorporated or not. Super short description of it includes things like: we created our own characters with attributes from the series in question (OP in that case). This was done after we earned points answering questions related to that series. Then we had battles in certain settings wherein there was a thread with a time limit for us to type out our interactions/strategy. Then there was a vote. This continued in ranked tiers.
Also you didn’t respond about if it was anything like just us writing up and comparing descriptions like what Jawahib did in his threads here on this forum. (Just look at the bottom of this page and you should see them linked as related threads.)
Ah thanks. Eventually, the character tournaments can probably come back too. But yes, exactly what Jawa's doing. But people like me won't see it/are less likely to see it unless it has a subsection to bring attention to it. This seems to be the trend for our current users. From back from OPF, contests always promoted activity, so as long as people are interested, why not have others join in as well?>
Ah...see, the part I was curious about here was what made it a contest. But it is not a contest between users, only the characters. It's pretty much what we already have character-battles for, yes?
Ah, so there is a One Piece battle section. Personally, I think this section is going to be quite slow based on my time overseeing back at OPF. My bias would be to have one consolidated subsection for all battles. This keeps it organized and promotes activity since One Piece related limitations probably keeps the section slow. Again per the above, having separate areas is probably why it isn't getting as many views/responses as it would. Plus, if there's interest in contests, even better.>
Yeah, the Character Battles section is in Anime & Manga General as well, so anyone is fair game. I do agree that limiting it to just OP is boring, but when it comes to using any character from any series we should probably mandate enough information given for the characters, since not everyone has read every series and thus has context for how powerful they are. (Spoilers might be an issue here, though...)
I guess myself and Marco weren't aware of this then. >
As of my current understanding, it doesn't sound all that different from the Character Battles subsection that already exists. If it was to serve as a contest with rewards for users (to promote activity) perhaps we could include a vote not only for who wins, but also for best post in the thread by a user?
Yup, exactly. The "contest" part is the best post (not the tournament style of winner of the fights). So since we didn't know about it, essentially this is to only ask if people want contests or not and to also help draw attention since not everyone is aware of the section already existing.>
Furthermore, if we start without a written scenario (such as the Jawahib threads Weeby brought up) I think that leaves more room for users to come up with different possibilities/scenarios they'd present on who wins. Finally, I would like to see this contest to to take into consideration two factors:
1. Leave out insanely powerful characters (reality warper/meta tier) to keep it interesting. Characters like Giorno Giovanna, Najimi Ajimu, Featherine Augustus Aurora, Demonbane etc. are literally invincible and not fun to argue about.
2. Adjust for in-universe specific mechanics (Do other characters have chakra? If not, then a lot of Naruto abilities do nothing...)
I'm not too worried about how much description/set up a potential entry has. If it's a great match-up, the discussion on parameters will naturally come up. I'm biased to think even overpowered characters are the same that it just takes the right match-up to make it interesting. Submissions, capturing/trapping, suffocation based KOs, etc. are all still possible (unless the character does not have lungs, not sure since I don't recognize all the listed characters). The whole point is to make the battle match-up fun.
I've never seen a situations like the second factor where powers do not transfer over. I guess it could be applied to handicap the stronger fighter. I personally think anything goes, as long as it is clarified. With the right parameters, even on overpowered character can be a great match up for someone much weaker.
WeebyWitch too. I'm biased against wanting a tournament style "winner". Kinda focusing on the wrong part: just coming up with fun battles to discuss.
Based on how quickly people voted, I truly think this is worth pursuing. Plus, we need some organization. It sounds like Jawa's posts should be in the link Grin posted, but I only saw the template and two One Piece battles. If myself and Marco didn't know about it, it's likely other users didn't know it existed.
Hopefully this clarifies/bridges the major points.
