I don't really want to make a thread for it, but I made a hypothesis about the relationship between Kaido and Yamato that I'd like to share. It's not a theory since it's not based on evidence; instead it's only what I feel like is going to happen.
Kaido is a proud and powerful man. It's not hard to imagine him wanting to have a strong man as his successor. When Yamato was born, not only she happened to be a female, which was not what Kaido would have wanted, but during birth the mother passed away, taking away the person Kaido loved the most. He blamed Yamato for it, and in spite of her, Kaido kept calling her "son" to disrespect her, as "the son you should've been".
At the same time, Yamato never felt close to him because he was disappointed by her. She looked for a father figure elsewhere and found it in Oden. He was a man she truly admired, unlike her father. He moved her so much, she decided to live for Oden's dream, impersonating him as if it was some next level roleplaying. She doesn't identify as a man, like many people are already saying. She's being Oden himself; it's the equivalent of being the "son" that Kaido wanted, but in her own way, but for Oden and in spite of her father.
As for Kaido, after the death of his beloved one, he lost what kept him willing to live, and started drinking to forget and find a way to free himself from those suppressed emotions. After all, he's considered "the strongest creature in the world", and being so proud, he could never admit being weak emotionally. That is also what led him to not finding purpose in his life and starting to attempt to commit suicide.
Nope, this fits what breadcrumbs we do have on the Kaidou/Yamato relationship. I don't know enough kanji to know 100% that there isn't a feminine way to create the name "Yamato", but it's stereotypically masculine. We know Kaidou refers to her as "son", so definitely a great theory, so thanks for sharing!
It only gets worse once you add on the idolization of Oden! No wonder Kaidou doesn't like her, but that makes her more likable for us.
I'm actually more curious about the announcement that Kaido is going to make. The world already knows about his alliance with BM, so what is he announcing? It can't be that it's true that he's marrying off Yamato to one of BM's kids? I'm hoping the announcement is about something even more exciting though. That panel of Kaido standing with his All-Stars looks badass btw.
By Oda's writing style, no. Direct overlap with WCI is a no-no. Might be a short theory, but I got something to add to the theory section.>
Didn't someone say about the possibility of Kaido being a Chimera? I can't remember if it was you who told me that or someone else. I always wonder why Kaido is called Hyakuju no Kaido (in which it's written as 100 beast) could be just to symbolize his strength to be on par with a hundred of beasts, or could be a literal meaning.
That was me and that was from the leaked info by the former editors. We will see if Oda runs with the "dragon only" aspect (since Kaidou's dragon form does have horns, but I'm blanking if they change to be more of the multi-antler like Chinese dragon stereotype).>
I like the whole Oni thing she has going for her.
I like the whole Oni thing she has going for her.
Yes, definitely befitting of how strong she is!>
Interesting they think Yamato is a kid though - he looked like an adult to me?
It's all relative. Yamato is probably in her young to mid 20's. I'm not sure this "they" is referring to, but almost everyone else in Kaidou's crew is older than her. The disrespect Kaidou has for Yamato probably carries over to everyone that isn't close to her power level. The underlings have to respect her, but the Tobbi Roppou don't (ah, so I guess contextually this is Ulti/Page One?).>
Also, is it just me or is Izo kinda hot?
I don't remember any dramatic changes to the character design. There is greater facial details. So I'm gonna say the backstory and new found respect is creating the increased interest.>
Kaido, Orochi and all the All Stars are together. That’s a very dangerous room. Certainly not one you can charge head first into.
Luffy's still gonna do it...Poor Nami though. Her group is SCREWED. Even if they manage to save Momo from the execution, all of the help from Jinbei/Robin/allies that infiltrated...they might struggle against the low ranking enemies (essentially almost all the Gifters are there so they might win by just tiring Jinbei/Luffy/Zoro/Kid out).>
I’m really digging Yamato’s design. With characters like Kiku/Izo around (men with feminine features), it wouldn’t be out of the realm of believability for her to masquerade as a man with chest coverings. I’m really glad he doesn’t have the “typical” One Piece girl body (see Nami/Robin) - she seems to have a healthier chest to waist ratio. I do wonder what hair colour Oda will choose, though. I could see white/silver, but watch him pick some crazy bright colour instead.
Yup, it was Oda's decision to have all these bright colors to make Wano Kuni stand out in people's memories. Just like how we are trying to save colors for important rankings, I'm sure Oda is doing the same thing for all the new characters. I'm trying to think what doesn't overlap with previous characters...and there isn't much since there are so many.>
I think the time Ace spent on Wano might end up being explored a little now we have this Yamato/Ace connection. Hopefully next chapter?
I would definitely enjoy an Ace tangent! It would create an immediate bond for Luffy to trust Yamato and then allow Yamato to stop Luffy from doing the usual incredibly stupid things he always does. I really like this idea since it progresses the plot a lot.>
I'm curious about what that shadow Marco saw was though. Unless he was seeing the shadow of Law's submarine? IDK.
That's what I though too, but hopefully it is an additional party/X-factor. Marco already knows about Luffy and Law's alliance and plus he seems to be more informed than most so him knowing Law's submarine seems likely. Plus the sub isn't "big". I'm definitely leaning towards this being a separate twist.>
I think Oden maybe trained him or at least has something to do with him now. Oh, and this site the link does expire, so I'll update the top post.
No, unfortunately Yamato says that she only got to see the execution and this is what sparked her idolization of him. So she was young 20 years ago, so her being around Ace's age makes sense.>
I'm confused. If Yama is such an Oden fangirl why does she use Kaido's technique? Is that just an attack their family is born knowing?
Yamato is young when Oden is executed. She was probably trained directly by Kaidou and he probably constantly tried to change her mindset/idolization. He wants her to be his successor, but she is choosing not to.>
At least now we know why Kaido was withholding information about Yamato. He wanted everyone present for the gender reveal. He especially wanted Big Mom there to remind her of how she used to be when she was younger so she can return to form and become the Pirate Queen.
I think the "gender reveal" will surprise the weak underlings, but I have to think the execs and Tobbi Roppou know already. So I'm thinking something completely separate for the announcement. >
BY THE WAY! If somebody has already played with AC4 - Black Flag, then you must know that there was a female pirate, who was disguised herself as a man. And her name was MARY READ.
Mary Read was the crew member of Jack Rackham alongside with Anne Bonney, and sadly she's died in prison after giving birth to an unborn child.
As far as I know, Oda isn't involved in the One Piece games (he was for the very first one for sure). This is why game only characters, so far, have not crossed into the manga. It would be a great nod to the first game if Oda told them to create Mary Read though. So I'm not gonna say it won't happen, but the overlap is quite a bit. >
Not sure if we're supposed to be impressed Luffy almost dislocated Page One's jaw or that Page One only took that much damage. Luffy is obviously above the Tobi Roppo but not by a huge margin.
No, this was only Gear Third. Gear Fourth is a huge power-up. Luffy should be able to take on both Ulti and Page One at the same time and still win. They are on the weak half of the Tobi Roppou though. We'll see if any of them are stronger than Luffy, which is a possibility. I gotta go back and check the Yamato fight. It was late, so I only was attentive to the text. Yamato's stronger than I thought if Luffy's in Gear Fourth.>
Wonder who Yamato is referring to fighting before...
Is the character steering a new Heart Pirate we haven't seen before?
I don't think so (seems familiar but they are all implied to be weak so I don't pay as much attention). Law's crew is only ~20 and it isn't like they could just recruit people in Wano Kuni.>
Marco said he's going to check out a blob... Marco v Perospero?
I hope not. The raw will help, but it seems like it is underwater. Marco's eyesight is good enough to see/recognize Perospero. >
Curious what Yamato means by becoming a man... literally? Figuratively? Because not gonna lie she cute. How old is she I wonder?
It's both Kaidou's brainwashing attempts and the idolization of Oden (likely Yamato's rationalization to go along with what her father figure wants). Likely literally, so she may get her wish since Iva can make this happen. I sure as hell hope not since it's one of the few legit female fighters we have (only Boa essentially).
I'm betting she's around Ace's age (little older). Mid-ish 20's now.
