Hi all, this is a game inspired by Taboo where the aim is to describe a One Piece character in less than 20 words (might shorten this depending on how we go), but you have a list of words that are taboo that you can't use in your description. Bringing this back from OPF by popular demand (i.e. WeebyWitch mentioned it one time).
The way it works is that I will start by generating a "card" for only one person to see (will probably rope Marco Polo or WeebyWitch into this lol), that contains the character they need to describe, and a list of 10 taboo words that cannot be featured in their description. They will try to come up with a short description that works around these words (and satisfies a few more rules which we'll get to in a moment), and then post that description in this thread, where players are free to guess who they might be talking about. Once a player guesses correctly, the previous player who made the description PMs that player a new card with a new character, and then the cycle kicks off again.
There are a few extra rules to be aware of that I will go through now:
- You can't use "sounds like" or "rhymes with" clues (e.g. if I Kuma, I can't have "rhymes with Boomer" in the description)
- You can't include part of the name/word, or part of a taboo name/word in your description (e.g. if I have Monkey D. Luffy, I can't use "D" or "Monkey" (or "Luffy" obviously) in my description)
- No unique Devil Fruits/moves can be mentioned. This is a new rule inspired by WeebyWitch, but it makes a LOT of sense. If I get Zoro, it becomes too difficult to rule out all of his unique moves, and the describer can literally just say "onigiri" as their entire description and still have everyone figure it out. For now this rule is exclusive to named moves - words that have actually left characters' mouths (or that we otherwise see appear in text). So, if I had Sanji, I could say "Black Leg" (assuming it wasn't taboo), but I couldn't say "Mutton Shot" or "Diable Jambe". With Devil Fruits, their names are off-limits, but you can allude to them (e.g. I could talk about a "chilling touch" with Kuzan, but couldn't directly say "ice").
- No initials can be used to represent the name/word (e.g. if I have Portgas D. Ace, I can't say PDA. I can't refer to "DF" if "Devil Fruit" is taboo, or "WG" if "World Government" is taboo)
- No jumping across languages. If "Straw Hat" is taboo, we can't use "mugiwara" (and vice versa). Again expecting a level of good faith here.
- Taboo words are all ideally one word, but in some cases where it's appropriate you can have pairs of words (e.g. "Black Leg", "Straw Hat", "Devil Fruit", "Worst Generation" etc.)
- No direct family relations (e.g. can't say "Nojiko's sister" for Nami, or "Garp's Grandson" for Luffy)
If these rules are too harsh/not harsh enough, I am happy to listen to feedback and edit them as needed. They're all a work in progress, and I'm happy to take suggestions or try out new variants if people like :)
SO let's run through a mock example. I as Jawa send Marco a "card" like this:
Nami
1. Weather
2. Navigator
3. Clima-Tact
4. Straw Hat
5. Tangerine
6. Arlong
7. Orange
8. Burglar
9. Beli
10. Map
Marco then needs to generate a description of Nami that complies with the above rules and doesn't mention the taboo words. For example:
"Female Pirate who can sense changes in the air to help direct her ship"
Then everyone in the post has to guess who I'm talking about. Let's say User X correctly guesses Nami. Now Marco has to think of the next character and generate a new "Card" for User X to describe. The next user who guesses correctly is given a card by User X and so on.
So on that note, please be willing to generate a new card for the next player when you take a guess (tbh I find it one of the more fun parts of the game). If you REALLY don't want to, and just wanted to have a guess, then please say so and one of the other users who guessed before you is next, or the person who described simply picks someone who's already participated in the game. This rule more functions as a preventative measure for someone who didn't read the rules jumping into the latest post of the thread thinking "I can guess who that is", guessing, and then jumping out of the thread, effectively freezing the game without realising, by telling the other players who HAVE read the rules what to do in that circumstance.
I'm also considering increasing the scope of possible words to more than just character names, and extend to anything that can be found within the OP world like Devil Fruits, swords or pirates, but I'll see what you guys think of that before implementing it.
