My way:
1) Live radio: kexp is fantastic, npr liveshows, kcrw, bbc live, xray, and others. You can discover absolutely great singers, bands, styles there.
2) Gonna sound weird but talent shows like got talent/voice etc. You cand find there if not new artists (but there are some names I found there) at least new songs/interpretations.
3) Embark a youtube/spotify/apple music/etc journey.
4) Listen music from other countries. I know that english is the default language to listen but is not the only one.
5) And probably the BIG THING is to force yourself to listen to new things and to try to understand them.
I think that the most important thing about music is the "message" it sends. If a listener cannot get to that core then there is only some sound that is better than the random noise but that's all. If you don't resonate with that message is ok, forget about it, but should at least try to get to it and decide that is not ok for you.
For example, I found out that I don't like really hardcore metal (trash, death etc) which is ok, so I focus on other things. But I tried to listen, to read the lyrics, and to find out if it is for me or not.
