The Hidden Truth and True Power of the Ope-Ope Fruit

Marco Polo seiryu Jawahib I hope you guys can read this and let me know your opinions on it. Compared to my usual theories, this will be considerably shorter but equally significant. One of the concepts I'm basing this theory on is one I've talked about in more detail in my theory about the ancient weapons. I won't tire you with a long winded explanation but what you need to get from it to read this theory is the idea that advanced haoshoku haki can allow a user to maintain a part of their consciousness in an object / location and can leave residual haki, at least I beleive so. With that in mind, let's get on with the theory. The Ope-Ope fruit is certainly a multifaceted one among devil fruits but we've only seen two sides of it, its potent fighting potential and the potential for a knowledgeable user to use its abilities to perform the ageless surgery on another and gift them with eternal youth. Well, I'm here to tell you that we've seen one more facet of this ever so mysterious fruit and it's a HUGE and extremely important part of it. To go back to the beginning, the very introduction of the ope-ope fruit has been a very subtle one, with its true significance being hidden under the emotional scenario that is Corazon's adventure with Law and its true potential being hidden under the guise of comic relief. The Ope-Ope fruit was once found by a pirate / former marine named Diez Barrels (X-Drake's father) and he wanted to sell it to the government for money. So far so good, right? I mean, it'd make sense for the government to want such a powerful for itself. HOWEVER, the price they were willing to pay for it was...*drum rolls*...a whole whooping 5 BILLION (5.000.000.000) belly. Can we take a moment to realistically comprehend what this amount means? This price is more or less the same as Whitebeard's bounty. Hell, it's roughly just 500.000 short of the pirate king's bounty. They wanted it badly enough that stealing it meant you'd make the world government your enemy for the entirety of the eternal life you may had gotten. You might be thinking "Yeah, but they could grant Im (if he's not already immortal) or whoever else eternal youth through the ageless surgery, so it's worth the money." Yeah, but is that really the case? Law said that many people view the Ope-Ope fruit as the ultimate devil fruit and regard it as the devil fruit which has the power to realize one of humanity's oldest dreams. Here's the 5 billion belly question though: Even if that dream is eternal youth, is the ageless surgery truly the pinnacle of the ope-ope fruit and its mightiest ability? In my opinion, : and Doffy knew that. Why does it matter that Doffy knew that you ask? It matters a lot, because Doffy was aware of what the world government has hidden away at Mary Geoise. And in light of his knowledge, Doffy stated the most important ability of the Ope-Ope fruit during his fight with Law. This is what this theory has been leading up to so pay very close attention to this next part. That ability is none other than: PERSONALITY TRANSPLANT Yes, you absolutely heard me right. The ability which gave Smoker boobs, gave Tashigi a taste of what respiratory failure would feel like, made Robin want to kill Franky and left Sanji with a crippling debt to Nami is the one I'm talking about. Please remember this picture for now because you'll grow a new appreciation for it after I show it to you again after saying some things. First, I want to point out a fact about the personality transplant. We've all made a big deal out of the ageless surgery and it is indeed a big deal. Ever since it was introduced, there have always been people like Im, who made us think "Is he on of them? Is he one of the vampires who've been operated on?". It's still a possibility but is the ageless surgery really the only way to achieve eternal youth? How attached do you think that people like the Gorosei are to their original bodies? Imagine if the user of the Ope-Ope fruit was in the side of the world government. Putting their personalities (mind) in a younger person's body and letting the young person's mind die in their old bodies would as easy as making a gesture with one's hands. Morals? : This is the world government we're talking about and I sincerely doubt any one of them would be impeded by such notions. With that in mind, I don't even dare to presume how many bodies the Gorosei have switched. Is that everything? Heavens no, this last part is the most important. I hope you still remember the concept of "advanced haoshoku haki allowing users to leave part of their consciousness in an object", which I mentioned at the very start of this theory. In One Piece, we've run into the concept of "inheriting one's will" and "waiting for the right time and person" multiple times. However, some of them have been hinted to be more literal than we'd initially thought. Personalities of people with immensly strong haoshoku haki have been hinted to still be waiting for people, people like Roger and Xebec. Now, normally, the user of the Ope-Ope fruit can only switch personalities, not "inject" them into objects like I believe haoshoku can. HOWEVER, what if someone's personality is contained at some object through haoshoku and THEN switched out with another's? What personality am I talking about? The possibilities are open but I have a specific one in mind: Rocks D. Xebec Initially I considered Xebec would be found at the same location as Uranus but that role can be easily filled by the world government. But in the context of this theory, a possible scenario, which I strongly believe is likely to be the case, is that the world government has Xebec's consciousness hidden away under Mary Geoise. Xebec is the one person who presumably knew at least as much as Roger about the Void Century and about each dark secret and project the world government has been carefully hiding. The possibility to unleash Xebec on the world once more (without a Roger and a less strong Garp) or the possibility to gain Xebec's knowledge about the secrets of the world government. Both would be possible by putting his consciousness on a new body and both would be catastrophic. Doffy knew it!! What is "that day"? Wasn't it the day he discovered and came across the secret the world governemnt keeps under Mary Geoise? And how would the Ope-Ope fruit's abilities help him on that day? I don't think he was thinking "Oh, if only I could use the Ope-Ope fruit to perform the ageless surgery on someone right now". No, I believe the ability he was refering to is precisely: personality transplant. That was how he'd be able to use the treasure of Mary Geoise like he states. Another possible scenario other than the Xebec one is if the treasure of Mary Geoise is a weapon of a class similar to the 3 ancient weapons and it can be operated only with someone's consciousness taking it over and controlling it. In any case, the scenarios are endless and all are fun to think about. The one thing that was hopefully made apparent is how ridiculously powerful and important the Ope-Ope fruit and what a "coincidence" it is that its current user bares the secret name of D. This is really interesting, and it might be my favourite Ope Ope no Mi theory (I have read the "Law makes Luffy immortal to beat Kaido and then dies" theory far too many times). The personality transplant ability was used as a gag in Punk Hazard, but the more you think about it, the more dangerous it could be. Doffy just needs to switch bodies with someone who's allowed in Mariejois, steal the treasure and run. I can understand why he's so mad at Law for not being on his side now : Also, mentioning Xebec here has made me want to update this theory with some fun new ideas...

Woah, so I guess I already commented on the most important aspect of the theory in Marco's theory. But yes, I don't think Oda realized the loophole he created with the personality swap (or maybe he did and it is going to be a part of the main plot). The personality swap creates eternal life for the ope ope no mi user as long as they are willing to take on someone else's body. As for the Doffy aspect, it is as simple as a Room allows him to steal the entire treasury without having to open the lock/safe. I think it's highly unlikely there is anything more to it than that aspect. He could already get in freely and he acknowledges he could not just waltz in during the current time (of the Dressrosa arc). Kinda funny that we came to the same conclusions, but just slightly differed on the context...wait. I just realized the flaw. The personality switch only works to extend the lifespan once. Xebec transfers his personality into the young Teach, but the ope ope ability remains in Xebec's body, which gets defeated and killed by Roger and Garp. The only way to keep the cycle going is that the younger person has a weapon (if the younger person has trained enough to use haki, then they would be able to defend and stop their death since they are upgrading to Xebec's body, which is thoroughly trained). The key is that the younger person has to not be able to use haki so they cannot defend against being killed by Xebec once he is in the younger body. I'm just using Xebec since he is the person dastardly enough to do it. And thankfully, the plot stopped this from being possible.

Unfortunately we didn't see much fighting on Sanji's part in Nami's body and vice versa, or Smoker in Tashigi's and vice versa, so I can't really say yet. It'd be a big plot hole if Xebec could be killed like that, that's for sure. That's why I suggest some sort of limitations down below. The "immortality" is pretty much a bonus for Doffy tbh, the theory is based on the assumption that the treasure of Mary Geoise needs a soul to operate it or the treasure is the soul / personality itself. The rest is pretty much what we've said in Marco's theory, yeah. seiryu I do want to point out something worth noting though. I sincerely believe that there are 2 limitations to the Ope-Ope fruit's personality swap or else Oda would have missed an even bigger plothole if those aren't established: 1) I doubt the ope-ope user can switch his own personality with another's. If they could, then could always switch their personalities with their opponent, wound themselves fatally (the opponent could do it too but they'd be less prepared and more shocked by the develoment) and then switch back bodies to find a fatally wounded enemy who's only waiting to receivethe finishing blow. That would too much of a cheat I think BUT if the 2nd limitation exists, this can be circumvented even if the ope-ope user can switch their own personality. 2) The ope-ope user probably can't switch a personality whose haki is weaker than their own. This opens up the question of why Sanji and Smoker got done in but I think Law is stronger so it makes sense. This would prevent scenarios like the one I describe above. In a fight were haki levels are similar, the enemy could "resist" the personality swap. That would prevent the ope-ope user doing something like putting Kaido's personality in the body of a small fry pleasure and killing the pleasure with Kaido's personality inside.

No one could control any of the abilities/powers of the person they swapped with. Even if someone is trained with haki, the body has to have been physically trained to use haki. The biggest/obvious example: even if Luffy is swapped into Sanji's body (as of right now), Luffy cannot use any form of haki that uses haoushoku. If Luffy and Zoro are switched, they can still use busoushoku and likely kenbunshoku (side tangent on this a little later). There is the potential that basic haki control can dramatically differ between people, so maybe there is a dramatic drop in level of proficiency/mastery even among a Luffy and Zoro swap. I only think this happens if there is a size/race swap, like Luffy being swapped into Oz Jr. or Zoro into Inuarashi. Kenbunshoku could immediately be completely different IF the "style" of kenbunshoku is different. Luffy's kenbunshoku is feeling based. So potentially anyone that isn't a feeling based kenbunshoku user, would struggle or potentially not be able to use kenbunshoku if switched into Luffy's body. An interesting tangent is if Luffy is switched into Zoro right now. Does Luffy's mastery of haoushoku coating allow him to immediately "upgrade" Zoro who cannot even use a haoushoku wave? For real life examples: just to make things fair for friends that don't regularly play pool, those of us that did play regularly had to play with a reverse grip/use our non-dominant hand. At least for most of us, it didn't take long to be better than those that don't play. I think it is somewhat common to have a power of "reversal" (similar to this opposite movement pattern) in fighting manga. Those with skill can readily adapt. Smoker began to adapt quite quickly, but he was limited by a weak body. Ah, so actually we DO have confirmation on the haki usage. Tashigi is shown to have very weak busoushoku. Smoker commented that he couldn't move freely because it was so different. I gotta be blunt that I think the "Laugh Tale twist" has people running with the idea that treasures are not monetarily valuable treasures. Oda from almost the very beginning had to quell this confirming that One Piece is an actual treasure on top of the twist. When Oda says something is a treasure, 100% safe to assume it is a treasure. AHHHHH...stupid giant mugiwara boushi B.S....I REALLY hope Oda has a legitimate plan for this that becomes fully Oda levels of connectivity/beliveability content, but I think a huge part of this scene is that there are likely many levels of safes/vaults. So potentially, even Doffy doesn't know about the deepest levels of treasures/things kept in Mariejois' deepest levels. The monetary treasure might be highest up and easiest to steal since the deepest stuff is related to the Laugh Tale twist. To further run with the Doffy situation, we have two major scenarios. The best case scenario (in Doffy's mind/what he wanted) is to have one of his subordinates eat the ope ope no mi, so he can steal the Mariejois treasure and then have the immortality surgery performed on him. The treasure he knows about is both monetarily huge (maybe even trillions of beli) and also influential/can be used to bribe Tenryuubito/Gorosei/Government/etc. Thus, I read that he was fine just eating the ope ope no mi himself to get the treasure. > 1) I doubt the ope-ope user can switch his own personality with another's. This is zero problem because the ope ope abilities now stays in the user. This actually is a suicide strategy. With no means of switching back, the ope ope user just killed themselves. Haki protects people from Rooms. So a strong opponent cannot be switched into a weak opponent (Law tried to use cheat techniques on Kaidou and Big Mom and told us whatever he did try failed). I'm skipping the last part since we got to the same conclusion. Although it sounds like the panel of Law's confirmation might have been skipped/forgotten.

seiryu I liked the haki aspect! Let me finish commenting on the rest before I get back into it though. Like you say, I agree about Law and it's the reason why I think the ope-ope fruit has limitations, which were thankfully circumvented. You're right on the suicidal aspect, the user wouldn't be able to switch back indeed. Though, it's worth noting that it'd make for the most effective suicide attack if the user isn't attached to their original body, since they could just switch bodies with their opponent right before death and kill them (resisiding in their original body now) before they had a chance to figure out how the ope-ope fruit worked and switch back. Well, that's just an interesting thought though, we already know there are limitations, and it's a good thing there are. The biggest snag in the scenario of the treasure of Mary Geoise being a simple monetary treasure is that it pegs the question of how Doffy would use it to conquer the world. He can already blackmail the tenryubito with his knowledge of it and he should be rich enough from his SMILE trading and even his raiding days. Even if the treasure was trillions of belly, how would they help him? He'd just be making an enemy of the world government for mere money. Compared to that, even his "passive aggresive" behaviour of blackmailing them when he really needs to is better since he has "influence" and they seem to tolerate him using such an influence as long as it doesn't affect them directly. There may real treasure as well, along with the treasure I'm impling, but I strongly believe the treasure Doffy is talking about is something regarding the soul. I'm actually thinking that the type of kenbunshoku would carry over with the personality along with mastery and there wouldn't be a problem. I'm not recalling a "conquer the world" line by Doffy, although I think I know exactly what panel/speech bubble this comes up in (since it is at the end of his explanation of the treasure). So we just have different extents/scales of the level of influence. There is something that is related to the Ancient Kingdom/Void Century/D. clan/etc. that Doffy was specifically after. I have my doubts that it is the giant mugiwara boushi. Similarly, I'm biased to say it is on the smaller/lower end of the influence spectrum because Doffy just wants to see the Tenryuubito suffer, just like how he had to suffer. Doffy is content with letting Kaidou be the one to do the bigger/grander conquering> Yup, that's exactly what I was implying. I do 100% agree that Doffy wanted the world to suffer but I'm not sure if he believed that Kaido could go as far as threatening even the tenryubito. Having seen the treasure and knowing it'd allow its holder to hold the reins of the world, I think he knew Kaido wouldn't be adequate and was simply raising a "distraction" (which also offered a considerable amount of destruction) in Kaido, while his main plan had to do with Law and the ope-ope fruit. > Considering we don't see Doffy as a teenager, I do agree that he probably ate the ito ito no mi quite early (he is just wishing that he had the ope ope no mi when he was a child). Fam I have been on the "Ope Ope no Mi is broke as hell" train as soon as we saw that personality switch. If the story didn't introduce the Haki restriction (that people with very strong Haki can't be messed with with his power) then we'd be having serious questions like why didn't he swap Fujitora and Doflamingo's minds on Green Bit? I think the inclusion of Law into the main story for so long has it quite likely that we're going to find out some big truths about the Ope Ope no Mi. I think everything you've said is perfectly valid about the consequences of personality-swapping and Mariejois. But I mean, there are even more questions that's raised by this power if we think about it: - When we see Law use Shambles on personalities for the first time, we have this peculiar image of hearts being cut out and switched around. It implies a process where a personality (heart) is removed, then manually moved into another body. But doesn't this mean that he could've placed the personality inside a non-living body? If he's able to remove something, surely he'd be able to put it down where he pleases, even if it makes no sense. If we look at how Shambles is used in other contexts I don't see why this wouldn't work (e.g. replacing heads with cannonballs) Imagine he could place the personality in a rock, and so trap someone there. It'd change the entire atmosphere in a room whenever he walked, because Law would go from just "strong pirate" to "someone who can suck out your soul and place you in an eternal hell". - What about swapping with an animal or some such creature? - What happens to swapped personalities after Law dies? Are his "operations" permanent, or do they depend on him? This Fruit is an absolute treasure trove of mystery, and there is so much Oda can do with it, that rather than speculate I'm just gonna stand back (sorry it's a bit of a boring answer haha)

As for the implications, I suppose that both targets need to fullfill certain requirements to be valid as targets in the eyes of the skill itself. In the case of shambles, I guess it'd be something like coordinates / position / etc and in the case of the personality swap, I suppose a soul / heart / peronality. The animal portion makes it interesting and makes you wonder if it'd be possible so I guess there must some requirements in the strength of the soul and only an intelligent on qualifies. Funnily enough though, the theory is based on the assumption that you can "cheat" the skill itself, since the theory implies the possibility of the soul entering an object through haoshoku haki and then being switched with the ope-ope fruit.

Kaidou is the type to immediately kill people despite the twist of some sort of "daddy issues" that make him spare Momo. He would definitely destroy the entire world if he became the strongest crew then became Pirate King. And that definitely matches how Kaidou is so much more than the meat head people thought and might still think he is. Most of it is timing, but the difference at this level is very small so it is only Oda's context that makes the dreams for everyone else to not become possible. To me, Kaidou has the better plan than Big Mom. We aren't shown it, but realistically it is only his strongest members that eat SMILE. The number of series I have seen to completion is astronomically smaller than the series that I start and drop. I will probably drop the series if Luffy has a B.S. defeat of Kaidou. The running with the B.S. is already starting with chapter 1016 (not going into further details since it is spoilers). Because I've overanalyzed for so long, I know the point of no return. It will only go downhill. We've already discussed the chain reaction of disconnect, and chapter 1016 indicates it will spread to other parts of the plot (vs. only staying with Yonkou/admiral disconnect). It is very clear to me when an author/mangaka/whatever title for the literary style loses control. Puzzle pieces have to fit perfectly, so once key puzzle pieces are being forced into places they do not fit, it becomes impossible to have the picture be correct. This is the perfect analogy because even if corrections are attempted, to go with the analogy, the correct pieces are attached to the forced puzzle piece creates the wrong part of the puzzle in a place it isn't supposed to be. The plot cannot be re-written after a certain point, so those pieces are glued in place. If I can see the picture is not going to be correct (i.e. I can see the series is not going to be enjoyable, and this is relative to my level of expectation since I will always have an astronomically higher level of expectation for Oda and One Piece) I'm better off just dropping the series. I can 100% still do my job without reading the chapter since reading the chapter discussions is sufficient to get key details in addition to the gist of the chapter's plot. It would minimize how much I rip the B.S. apart at least. It's getting worse, and you are going to see it if it continues. And that's 100% guaranteed since I think it's safe to say you see parts of it already.

The point was that Doffy wanted things to go a certain way, and he was quite close, but the plan didn't work out and he lost his chance. Theoretically, he could still kill Law and look for the Ope-Ope fruit again but that'd literally be like looking for a needle in a haystack, even with Doffy's information network. I think Doffy plan revolved around Law cause he was the absolute perfect candidate for it. A kid with medical knowledge and not much left to live. I remind you that Corazon found out about the deal about the ope-ope no mi through Doffy, so Doffy was already planning on getting it. And I assume he wanted to give it to Law, steal the treasure and then have Law perform the ageless surgery on him. It'd probably be as easy as telling him "I'll destroy the world and the Tenryubito for you so help me out, you don't have long to live anyway". If Corazon hadn't saved Law, in more ways than one, he'd be stuck in Doffy's palm. In any case, of course we're in agreement, Doffy missed his chance when Law was saved and escaped with the Ope-Ope fruit. So in a sense, Corazon saved even more lives from Doffy than he thought. > It's getting worse, and you are going to see it if it continues.
