Hey everyone! Below is a REALLY OLD thread that I’m uploading here courtesy of Nessos. I'd also resurrected it back on OPF a while ago, but this originally from Forumpiece (REPRESENT Marco Polo sweetjacky ), so we're talking like 2014 dayz. Thus, the examples I use are pretty much all going to be pre-New World examples. I've also made some corrections/added extra notes to update everything, so hopefully everything here is 100% valid (please call out any mistakes you might catch). Enjoy
I was thinking that there should be some kind of attempt to properly categorise Logia and Paramecia Devil Fruit abilities. I believe that some other threads have kind of done what I’m trying to do here (this was actually part of the original thread but still very relevant Nessos lol), but here's mine anyway lol. I’m not going to do Zoan because Oda’s pretty much done it with the whole carnivorous, ancient, mythical etc. I haven't added in pictures because they aren’t really necessary, and I’ve also added in non-canon DF users to show that they will also fit under the categories I make for them.
I’ll start with Paramecia because they are the most common and most diverse.
Something I want to stress is that these categories do not totally cover each Devil Fruit - some may belong to more than one category (this is inevitable imo due to Oda's crazy imagination), but most tend to fall under one generally speaking.
Paramecia Class A: The Permanent Change
This class of Paramecia is perhaps the only class out of the three major classes (Zoan, Logia, Paramecia) to be used on a solely unconscious level. These fruits will alter the actual body of its eater, giving them additional properties and/or changing certain attributes to mimic an item or substance that already exists, be it natural or artificial.
<2020 addition> To be clear, because I remember people always rioting about the "solely unconscious" part, I want to clarify that Luffy using Gum Gum Pistol is utterly distinct from (for example) Kizaru using a laser beam. When Luffy uses his Devil Fruit, he is not directly accessing its power, but instead taking advantage of the change that it caused within him. When any of the other classes "use" their Devil Fruits, there's a direct access of power there that is different.
Examples include (but are not limited to):
Monkey D. Luffy – permanently made of rubber
Daz Bones (Mr.1)* ** – Permanently made of steel
‘Diamond’ Jozu* – Permanently made of diamond
*I believe that when we see these two change colour to look like steel and diamond respectively, this is just a visual aid that Oda has provided to make it easier to tell that they are made of their respective substances, not an indication that they must turn manually turn into the substance to gain its effects.
** In Mr.1's case, his ability to do the drill thingy with his arms is definitely more of a Class B property, but that's just an example of multiple categories being appropriate for a Devil Fruit.
Paramecia Class B: Self-Manipulators
These Devil Fruit eaters are able to extend or alter their bodies, or properties of their bodies in a particular way. Note that this does not mean that the extensions must originate from their user. These users often manipulate these extensions for alternate ends, but they cannot produce any substance from their bodies that is not a natural body part.
Examples include (but are not limited to):
Nico Robin –Create additional limbs
Miss Doublefinger – Extend herself to sharp points
Buffalo – Make parts of his body rotate freely like a propeller
I understand that there may sometimes be a blurry line between Class A and Class B, so the general rule of thumb we can use to distinguish is by asking: "Does this Devil Fruit power function while the user is asleep?". If yes, they'll fit in Class A; if no, Class B.
Paramecia Class C: The Manipulators
These abilities consist of some of the most random things that Oda can think of . This class covers the eaters who can alter their environment or aspects of their environment in any way. This is different from Class B because the effects of these fruits do not depend on the survival of the user. Example would be that havoc is still wreaked from WB’s quake punch, and him dying would not change that. Miss Doublefinger on the other hand needs to be alive to extend those thorns. Examples include (but are not limited to):
Whitebeard/Edward Newgate – Can create tremors)
Tsuru – Can hang things out like laundry
Inazuma – Can cut his environment to suit his needs
Paramecia Class D: The Producers
This is possibly the most dangerous class of Paramecia (excluding the gura gura no mi). These users are able to create any kind of substance or form that their ability will allow. Some of these will be hybrids of class C as well, but these are quite simple in application. This class can also be broken down into two sub-classes: Hybrid Logias and Non-Substances (weird name but meh).
Hybrid Logias are those which can create a particular substance, possibly with some variations, but lack the ability to transform into this substance and become intangible. They are often confused with actual Logia types and have potential to be Logia Types. Examples include (but are not limited to):
Magellan – Produces two types of poisons (Hydra and standard) in various ways. Likely the strongest in this class.
Mr.3 – Can produce wax from his body that can take on properties of steel
Doflamingo – Can create razor and sturdy strings from his body
<2020 addition> Trebol - Can create a sticky liquid substance
The Non-Substances are quite peculiar. The things that these users can create will be insubstantial, serve more than one purpose/use, and are often useful in battle situations. Examples include (but are not limited to):
Trafalgar Law – Can create a special Room in which he can freely manipulate anything inside. Living creatures are not harmed through any changes made by Law in this room.
Perona – Can create ghosts that offer a variety of uses, such as exploding and demoralising enemies. Can remove her spirit from her body
Foxy – Can create beams of light that heavily reduce the velocity of anything it hits.
You’ll probably be able to find a few loopholes in these classes, but I’ve tried to cover all possible Paramecias with the four above classes. Some fruits might be a bit of two or even three of these classes put together, but my only defence is that Oda has a crazy imagination.
Now, onto Logias. I was thinking about these before, and only two main categories stood out to me (energy/matter), but I've opted to expand them to be all the particle states of matter and the energy type. There aren't very many Logia revealed compared to Paramecia, so it will not be as diverse as the Paramecia. Also, unlike Paramecia, it shouldn't be the case that one Devil Fruit could fall under multiple categories (though I dare not say it's impossible lest Oda prove me a fool).
Logia Class A: The Gas-Based
These fruits are any that allow the eater to become and produce any substance that is in gas-form. These users are often middle to long range fighters, and in most cases can use their abilities to optimise travel speed. There are only 3 users in this class that I know of, and these are:
Caesar Clown – Can manipulate an extremely wide variety of gases (possibly any gas) he wills. The strongest in this class.
Smoker – Can transform into, manipulate and create large amounts of smoke.
Logia Class B: The Energy Forms
These Devil Fruits do not refer to any substance that has mass or specific form, but rather energy types. Of the four people who have them, 2 of them are able to use their Devil Fruit to move at ridiculous speeds.
Kizaru (Borsalino) – Light man that can travel at the speed of light and concentrate photons to become highly destructive laser beams.
Enel – Said to have the fruit that grants the user invincibility, he can create, manipulate and move at the speed of lightning. (A thing I noticed that isolates Enel from other Logias is that when casting lightning, it does not need to need come out of Enel himself. Every other user must produce their substances from themselves or in extremely close range of their bodies. We have seen Enel make lightning fall on his victim from the sky rather than himself.)
Blackbeard/Marshall D. Teach – Can create an unknown black substance (stated to be ‘darkness’) that has its own gravitational pull, and can absorb anything that makes direct contact with it. BB can then release, or ‘liberate’ whatever was absorbed in his darkness. He can also temporarily nullify other Devil Fruit abilities with physical contact with his skin. Only Logia to not become intangible. (I will not go into theories on how he obtained WB’s fruit)
<2020 note: these guys used to be in the gas category, but I've changed my mind as fire is far more energy than gas> Portgas D. Ace/Sabo – Can create any amount of fire to burn enemies and use this in a variety of ways.
Logia Class C: The Solid Logias
This is the most common category of fruit that we have seen. The abilities granted by this fruit enable the production of a specific solid, and the user will be immune to any adverse effects that these may provide. As they are so common, I have also broken them down into sub-categories – Temperature based, and Ability Based.
The temperature bases as you can guess are all about exposing your opponent to extremes in temperature. Ace is not included because so here are Temperature Bases:
Aokiji – Can flash-freeze anything around him, and can use this ability rapidly over an intense range, as seen when he freezes the ocean to let the stranded people cross to an island, the bay of Marineford, and the tsunami waves that WB’s uses to declare war. He can also manipulate the shape and intensity of his ice to create a variety of weapons, and when he freezes things, they always become encased with ice as though they were sculptures.
Monet – Can create snow with different properties and densities. Also has the ability to make it snow temporarily in a certain area, and once she commences making it snow, does not seem to exert any strength to continue its falling. She has been favouring close range tactics in which she uses dense snow to optimise her biting capabilities.
The ability bases are those who are a substance that is more diverse. Only two people so far fit under this category, and one of them is non-canon anyway. The fruits and the powers they grant often seem quite useless, but they will normally have many redeeming qualities. The people with ability bases are:
Crocodile – Can create and manipulate seemingly ordinary sand. He also has the peculiar ability to make twisters which are based on sand, and also the power to remove moisture from anything he touches with his hand. He can concentrate the sand to become weapons, and also uses his abilities to fly.
Simon – Curious abilities which allows him to create and manipulate paper. Him being a Gameboy Game exclusive character, I don’t know much about him, so I won’t really elaborate.
Logia Class D: The Liquid bases
These users very simply are and produce any different liquid respective to their DF abilities. These liquids may vary greatly and are appropriate in many different circumstances. Often we will see these users overwhelm an opponent in a large amount of their substance, or subdue them by encasing or trapping key joints. These users are:
Caribou – Can form a mud-like substance which he can use to store items within himself. His mud can take on the properties of quick-sand, but will rather make those it captures be stored inside of Caribou than simply sink down. It is actually quite similar to the Darkness fruit because of this.
Honey Queen – Non-canon user who can create some unknown liquid and manipulate it freely.
Gasparde – Non-canon user who can transform into a sticky candy syrup and create and manipulate it freely.
Akainu – Can create any amount of extremely hot magma and can manipulate the shape that it takes. He often uses his abilities at long range (Volcano Eruption) and close range, when he coats his fists in magma to increase the damage of his attacks
<2020 note: Akainu used to be in the Solid category, as he can create giant rocks as well (think Volcano Eruption), but I became convinced by the argument that magma is by definition melting/molten and thus liquid, and that the "solid" rocks we see could still be said to be melting, even if they aren't fully melted yet>
<2020 addition> I want to make a quick note about the "Plasma" category, as I remember this coming up when it was posted previously. Technically, as some might know, plasma is known as the 4th state of matter - what happens when gas gets super-heated. However, as there is no variation in types of plasma like we have variant liquids (e.g. Water/slime/mud), if we ever do see a Plasma DF, I'd probably just put it under "energy" type. I remember trying desperately to explain what I meant by "one type of plasma", and that not going well, so if you would like me to create a Plasma category, all you need to do to convince me is name 2 different hypothetical Devil Fruits that might fit in that category.
So, there are my categories for Paramecia and Logia-type Devil Fruits. I suppose I’ve always classed the users in this way subconsciously, but I wanted something concrete to refer to, and I figured I might as well share it with you guys. Feel free to discuss
