Wait, were the Numbers all SMILE users?
Punk Hazard suggests Caesar and Vegapunk were working on the SMILEs and the giants on the same island. Though for some reason, they switched from monster things to children.
No. Nothing in this chapter implies SMILE. Also no on the latter part too. GoldenVenus too. Caesar's work is after the explosion that makes Punk Hazard "hazardous" (it is probably called something else prior to Caesar being stupid since it was a major military base). At the time both Vegapunk and Caesar were working for the Government. The accident got Caesar kicked out (Vegapunk tries to warn him over and over) and this is where he then works for Kaidou and this unknown "failed" experiment. He then works on SMILE, and then gets an additional contract with Big Mom. This is where the plot then kicks in. The two projects are opposite ends of the experiment/research timeline. It also doesn't make sense because they seem legitimate in size. It is not a failure unless they lost all DNA and or whatever capability/process to make more Numbers (expansion below since Venus asks about it too).>
Maybe he's not going to use it unless he deems it absolutely necessary?
We already see Sanji's 50-50 mindset. He hates everything with even subtle implications to Vinsmoke. He overlooks this for his pervy-ness. Oda also has him use it when it is necessary for the plot (I'm going to reference Sanji saying he is going to die again because that is the canon word choice; anything other than that is an inaccurate translation, even if it's official).>
I don't know if you remember the panel from the end of Act 2 that shows their size, but yeah they're pretty darn huge...
The recent page with Jack and the 7th (whatever the Oni-based Number was) to fight the Scabbards is the best "scale" to use. Everyone, including Jack, is TINY compared to him. The doors are specifically made to fit one Number at a time. Those doors appear to be Oars (and not Oars Jr.) sized. Trees can be variable. Jack is not (or at least once he outgrew King/Queen), but the main point is set characters standing next to each other.>
Yamato still has time to develop over the course of the arc though. Who knows - maybe he changes your mind later on?
Yup, the sad flashback, even if it's only part of Kaidou's flashback is going to be huge. >
I still don't know what to say about Yamato since he's still so new, but I don't feel attached either.
I guess I'll pose the same question to you. If you have a typical Oda-level touching flashback, does that change your view?>
I interpreted it as BM saying Caesar failed to make the 'Giants'
No...so Caesar obviously succeeded. It is still a "failure" if it cannot be continued. So either two main options: the DNA source was contaminated/lost/etc. or the creation process is no longer possible (this requires Oda to show the mechanics, but some key element was lost; analogous to SMILE being a "failure" now because the Dressrosa plant was destroyed).
Also, the most accurate "scale" to use for Numbers is the panel of the baddies going out to fight the Scabbards. Jack is shown in the front with the 7th(?) guy in the back.
